When we talk about trauma, we’re referring to the difficult experiences that can change how we see the world, ourselves, and others. Trauma isn’t always a single, major event; sometimes, it’s a series of painful moments that build up over time. It can stem from experiences like bullying, challenging family dynamics, witnessing violence, or experiencing loss. Trauma affects everyone differently, and no two experiences are exactly alike.

Understanding the Impact of Trauma

Trauma can leave a lasting mark. Some people may feel afraid or anxious, even in safe environments. Others might struggle with trust, shut down emotionally, or react with anger over small issues because their mind and body are still “on alert.” Feelings of sadness, numbness, or a desire to avoid reminders of the trauma can arise, along with nightmares, trouble concentrating, or feeling disconnected from reality. These reactions are normal responses to trauma as our brains try to protect us when we feel threatened, often long after the traumatic event.

The Path to Healing from Trauma

The good news? There are effective ways to heal. With the right tools and support, trauma doesn’t have to define who you are. Here at Angelus, we’re here to help you find those tools and walk alongside you on your journey to recovery. Healing from trauma takes time, patience, and often a community to lean on.

Different Ways to Heal: Finding What Works for You

Since trauma affects people in unique ways, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for recovery. At Angelus, we offer various therapeutic approaches tailored to individual needs, including:

    • Individual Therapy
    • Couples/Family Therapy
    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

In today’s blog, we’ll focus on two powerful approaches we provide specifically for trauma recovery: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and the Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model (TREM) group.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): A Path to Healing

One highly effective therapy for trauma recovery is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR. This evidence-based therapy is designed to help individuals process and reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic memories. Trauma often leaves us with memories and emotions that feel “stuck” or overwhelming, making it hard to move forward in life. EMDR guides the brain to reprocess those memories in a way that is less painful and more manageable.

During an EMDR session, your therapist will ask you to focus on a specific traumatic memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, tapping, or sound. This stimulation helps the brain process the traumatic memory without re-traumatization. Over time, many individuals find they can think about the memory with less emotional intensity, leading to reduced anxiety, improved self-esteem, and greater emotional control in daily life.

At Angelus, we have nineteen clinicians trained in EMDR, including two who are certified by the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA). This certification reflects advanced training and experience, ensuring you’re in skilled hands as you work through challenging experiences. EMDR is particularly beneficial for those seeking a structured, effective approach to trauma healing without needing to discuss every painful detail.

Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model (TREM) Group

For individuals looking to heal in a supportive group environment, our Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model (TREM) group may be an ideal fit. This program is specifically designed for adults who want to navigate their trauma in a structured way, with support from our most experienced trauma clinician, Veronica Valiensi and peers who understand their journey. Group members meet once a week at our New Castle office, with the program spanning 24 to 29 weeks. This extended timeframe allows for deep, meaningful progress over time, giving individuals the space to explore trauma and healing gradually and safely.

TREM consists of three main stages, each building on the last to promote a holistic healing process:
    1. Empowerment: The first stage focuses on empowerment, including sessions on self-worth, body awareness, setting boundaries, and self-soothing techniques. Participants reconnect with a sense of control over their lives and bodies, which can be incredibly affirming.
    2. Understanding Trauma: During this stage, we explore what trauma is and its impact on the brain and body. The group discusses various types of abuse—physical, emotional, sexual, and institutional—and examines how trauma shapes feelings and behaviors. By understanding trauma more deeply, participants often find increased self-compassion and renewed hope for their journey forward.
    3. Healing and Recovery: The final stage is about translating insights into action. Sessions cover topics such as family dynamics, communication, healthy relationships, and decision-making. Participants work on self-acceptance, forgiveness, and other tools that help them move forward with confidence and peace.

Each stage of TREM offers support and strategies to help participants develop a greater sense of empowerment and agency. With weekly sessions, TREM fosters community, allowing members to experience a profound, gradual shift toward healing over six months. Sharing experiences with others who understand can make a significant difference in feeling connected and understood.
